Peer Education Programme for Older People (Pilot Project) — Tuesday 01 July, 2008

Background

This project aims to develop and offer a specialist mental health training programme for up to 15 older people from Hackney Black and Minority Ethnic communities to become peer educators within their communities.

The Peer Education Approach

A community based approach will be employed and the peer educators will be supported by their host organisations to set up groups after their training. The peer educators are expected to work with their host organisations or communities to:

Improve understanding of mental health issues and mental illness and challenge myths and taboos around mental illness;

Improve the knowledge of mental health legislation, client's rights as well as knowledge of services (voluntary, community and statutory);

Improve knowledge of healthy lifestyles and ways of maintaining mental wellbeing;

Signpost people to relevant health, social services and community based services;

Carry out other activities in line with the priorities
